Buying Earrings: What to Look For

Buying earrings, what should you look for? Three things count: shape, tone and closure. You will find all three on the product page once you know where to look.

When you buy earrings online, it helps to read a product page once from top to bottom, just like here. And if you don't know yet which shape you want, start with What types of earrings are there?.

What does the photo show you?

Look at the shape from the front and, if there is a second image, from the side. Does the pair sit flat on the lobe, hang, or form a ring? Then the tone: silver-tone, gold-tone or rose gold-tone, as the photo shows it. Picture your favorite top next to it; that helps more than any description.

With Quinn, the photo already shows everything that matters: one clear shape, one tone, close to the ear.

What does the Details line tell you?

At Theia, every product page ends with a short Details line: finish, stones and usually the closure too. If it says zirconia, they are zirconia. If it says stones, they are stones. And "no stones" means the shape alone makes the pair. Our earrings are fashion jewelry in copper alloy, in the finish the Details line names. For what the material terms mean, see which material for earrings.

Which earring closure is it?

In general you will meet four closures. Here is how to spot them and how to open them:

  • Stud: a straight post with a small back. To open, pull the back straight off.
  • Lever back: a hinged lever at the back that you flip open and close again once the earring is in. It keeps the pair close to the ear, as with Fiona - Pavé Earrings with Zirconia.
  • Latch back: typical for hoops. Gently release the small bar from its notch, put the hoop in and click it back into place.
  • Hook: a curved hook you simply hang in. It lets a drop earring swing freely.

Opening earrings becomes second nature after two or three tries, usually by the second morning.

What helps before you click?

At the bottom of every product page there are two more things: a 14-day right of withdrawal, and packed and shipped by us. If a detail you need is missing, just message us before you order. Some questions are answered faster by a short message than by three photos. For what drives the price of a pair, see how much earrings cost.

And now?

Shape, tone, closure: that is all you need to read a product page with confidence. To see the shapes side by side once more, visit our overview of earring types.
